Your spine or backbone keeps you upright and prevents you from falling over. Its strength allows you to twist and turn, and it protects your spinal cord and nerves from injury.
If your spine has been injured, everyday activities like sleeping, walking and bending can become difficult…and painful.
In this website, you have access to information about different areas of the spine, some of the most common injuries, and how these injuries are treated. We will discuss injuries related to the bones, or vertebrae, not the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries can be life threatening and are generally treated by orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons.
Each bone, or vertebrae, is numbered. Starting from the top, the regions are:
- Cervical / Neck - C1-C7
- Thoracolumbar / Mid Back - T1-T12
- Lumbar / Lower Back - L1-L5
- Sacrum - S1-S5
- Coccyx
Move your mouse over the spine to identify the different regions.
